A very tiny little package: Meeko
- Helen Morrison and Tori Gerritts, volunteer (foster and tuck in)
Meeko was a very tiny, abandoned kitten who came to the Shelter on Sept. 30. He was one of five kittens living in a wood pile in a nearby town. Four of the kittens were caught and taken elsewhere. But the fifth very tiny kitten came to KAS. Meeko went with Tori Gerritts, one of our excellent fosters. He joined four other foster kittens, the Sweet Potatoes. They took him under their “wings” and helped him adjust. Meeko seems to have some physical issues. His back legs have been unsteady and somewhat weak. And he is unable to jump up onto things. But he is a determined little guy…and is gaining in strength. And he is able to pull himself up now onto the couch or chair, using his front legs. He is a very special, sweet boy!

Here is his journey with the Gerritts, as told by Tori.
Oct. 4: Meeko is getting better every day. He was very mad at me yesterday as I went through and picked out what I hope to be are the rest of the fleas. But he’s a soft little man now. He’s still sooo tiny (the size of my hand). I can’t wait to get him healthy so he can be let out of his little cage and run around more (I’m just weary do the fleas yet but I’ve been diligent on cleaning him so soon!) we brought in our old pen we used to use from when hadley was a baby so we can pen him in an area downstairs with toys. I also gave him his 3rd dose of medicine for worms yesterday so I’m anxious to see what his poop sample comes back with.

Nov. 1: I am emailing to discuss some concerns I have about my smallest foster, our baby man Meeko.
1. Since I had him he always walked a little funny, it’s like a waddle almost? I had Rod watch him walk and he agreed he’s got some funny back leg mechanics almost. He doesn’t run, it’s more like a fast waddle and he has never jumped. He will use his from arms to climb himself up into places. He also doesn’t run around and play like the others. He prefers a lap or small playing, I call it lazy play like my older cats how they play. We made him pet stairs and he uses those to get up on the couch and he’s getting a small meeko sized tower.
2. He has a very bony spine. It’s knobby. He’s eating and drinking just fine, and it’s always been like this but as his belly fills out and he’s getting older this hasn’t changed. He doesn’t have the same feel as the other kittens.
** he was extremely malnourished when I got him.. so it’s possible this is a factor for all of the above.
We love him and care about him, and would love for your input. Thank you!

Nov. 2: Meeko- yes.. he’s always been “off?” But special and we just wanna know what’s going on. Oh he was soo mad at me earlier. He had to get his little feet washed because of his poo puddle. But then he just got tucked back into his sling and he was fine (yes I have a cat sling he gets carried in when I need to get up to do stuff but he’s still sleepy).
Dec. 1: Meeks is a chubby little pork chop now who loves to be held, cuddled and play with his foster siblings.
He still can’t jump but he’s a fabulous climber.
So, that is our very special little man…whom we will care for and love and find the best home for, one that will cherish his Special needs.
