Lawrence

6-year-old Lawrence was surrendered to the Shelter when his owners moved to a place where cats were not allowed.

He quickly snuggled himself into everybody’s heart, being a love bug and wanting to cuddle at every opportunity. He followed his caretakers around the Shelter every step, social boy that he was.

At first, Lawrence seemed puzzled by the food choices he was offered. There were signs in his appearance that he had missed important nutrition and might have enjoyed human comfort food rather than eating a healthy cat diet. It took several weeks for the bright orange soda stains to fade from the white fur on his front paws.  But Lawrence adjusted soon to eating real cat food and drinking plain water, his health and vigor increased, his fur gained luster, and his eyes shone brightly.

We figured that his perfect home would be with people who didn’t mind a very affectionate lap cat and who had lots of time for him.

A family from New Hampshire took Lawrence home on April 15th.

Adoption counselor Nancy reported that Lawrence took to his new home and people very quickly and that they felt lucky to have him. Lawrence was friendly and affectionate from the start. He slept in bed with them and even got under the sheets and blankets. When he was sitting with his family members, they felt they could not move because he was so cute. Lawrence was eating well and was quite vigorous in the litter box. He supervised the cleaning of his litter box very carefully. The family was very happy with Lawrence and they "could not ask for a better cat." He was lots of fun, a great companionan best buddies with his new people already.

On April 23 the family wrote:
“Lawrence is a beautiful, wonderful, mischievous bundle of love! He finds new things to explore or get into daily, so we simply adjust things as needed. Lawrence has been perching in all the various windows and watching the world go by. He has been lounging on the area rugs and periodically attacking the rugs (which is pretty funny!) He knows when it's mealtime and gets VERY excited. He is super chatty (which we adore). He sleeps in bed with one of us every night. Currently he is curled up on a lap, purring up a storm!”

On April 28 they wrote:
“Lawrence is a seeker of adventure, a sunbather and a cuddle monster. He seems to enjoy having wide open spaces to chase spring toys, high perches to survey his surroundings and numerous windows where he can supervise the wildlife and our dog park neighbors. Lawrence clearly informs us when it is time for his meals by becoming rambunctious and extra chirpy, which is very considerate and cute of him.
We feel so lucky to have found this wonderful furball ... Thank you again!”

Ricky

Ricky is an adorable 1.5-year-old longhaired boy. He was found as a stray with an injured foot and very matted fur which needed to be shaved when he arrived at the Shelter. Once his fur would grow back, he would look like a muffin and need daily brushing or a yearly summer-haircut. He seemed to enjoy his velvety hairdo!  He was very sweet and social with the Shelter volunteers. He was a lovely, affectionate cat who would do well with a family who could give him lots of time and attention.

Ricky was friendly with a dog at the house where he was rescued as a stray, but he regarded other cats as hunting toys. We felt that he might have grown up with a dog, needed to be the only cat in his new home and would love a cat-friendly dog as a buddy.

In March, Angela and her son Oakley started to volunteer at the Shelter, doing a weekly shift of morning duty. They were a great addition to the team, learning quickly how to feed and medicate the cats, how to clean their rooms, and tend to their needs. They had two dogs at home and enjoyed learning more about cat care.
At the end of their first shift, Oakley asked if he could spend time with Ricky. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Ricky was on Oakley’s lap in an instant. The two seemed to have a special bond.  Soon, the family applied to adopt Ricky and took him home on April 9th where he joined their two gentle family dogs: Griswold, a lovely Golden Retriever, and Lewis, the sweetest, laid-back Jack Russel Terrier. Angela sent regular updates.

We are home and settled and the car ride was super mellow and easy. Ricky lay right down in his carrier and Oakley sat in the back with him and talked to him the whole way. They are hunkered down in Oak’s room right now and he is happily sitting in the windowsills with all the sunlight coming in. Ricky snuggled up with Oak, who said right after this that Ricky was “what do you call it mom?! Making bread?!” 🤣 (biscuits)

They slept great all night in Oaks room. Oakley said he woke up twice and Ricky was lying near his head but as soon as they locked eyes he’d move to lie on his neck 🥰
He has found a spot on a shelf in Oaks closet that he likes too so we put the blanket you sent home with him in there. As soon as Oakley opened his shades Ricky jumped on the windowsill again.

He’s so talkative and just wants to be touching anyone who comes in the room. We are all so in love! My husband went in to lie down with Ricky last night when he got home from work and they both fell asleep. ☺️

Just thought you’d like to know how good our weekend has gone. Mr. Ricky is officially out and comfortable in the whole house!! He meows all the time, purrs so much and loves being picked up and cuddled! I even took a quick nap on Oak’s bed with Ricky and dog Lewis today!

Both dogs have adjusted really well and we’re all head over heels for Ricky! 🥰

He just found Lewis’s dog bed in a closet that we turned into a reading nook. ☺️

Ok…we knew it would happen…
We found one thing we can’t stand about this cat!
We just want more of him!! 😍 Like a big heaping pile of him!! 🤣
We can’t get enough! 🥰
Just another day trying to get work done!

Oh and…. He makes me late for things because I can’t resist sitting and snuggling him! It’s becoming a problem.
I'd stay home and cancel plans for this cat any day 😅

Salem

Salem was brought to the Shelter because she had started to fight with the other cat in the house which disrupted the family life. When sweet cats suddenly become cranky, it can be a sign of painful medical issues that are otherwise not obvious. In Salem’s case, it was fortunate that she was surrendered to us, because Dr. Sally discovered that Salem had a life-threatening infection of the uterus. She was spayed just in time and recovered beautifully.

Salem was a soulful, sensitive, 8-year-old kitty and the sweetest pet. She loved kids and adults of all ages. She waited two months at the Shelter for her very own person and then resumed her favorite activity as a lap cat. Salem was happily adopted by veterinary nurse Billi on April 5th. Billi had a gothic taste and a big heart for quirky felines. Salem fit right into her home.

Billi wrote on April 6th:
“Salem seems to be settling in very quickly. She snuggled on the couch a lot yesterday afternoon. She likes the cat tree in the living room. She slept in bed with me for a few minutes, then disappeared. She has been playing with toys. She used her litter box. She isn't obsessed with food, which is going to take getting use to after my previous cat 😆. I keep losing her because she blends in with everything so well. So, over all she seems happy. She is snuggled up to me right now.”

On May 21st Billi wrote:
“I figured out that Salem was a WWE wrestler in a previous life, because she does the elbow drop when she lies with me. She kind of hops up, then roles to her side and body slams down!”

Domino

This very handsome tuxedo boy came to us in 2024 when he was 1.5 years old. He stayed for 2 years before the perfect adopters came along for him.

Domino was intelligent, playful, inquisitive, and wanted to be loving. In fact, he was a cat who would bond very strongly with the humans who were close to him. But he came from a situation that caused him a lot of anxiety, made him unpredictable and act out. A small care team of fearless and patient volunteers were assigned to tend to him in his room which was comfortable, full of fun cat trees, and bright with a sunny bay window offering a view into the woods.

Picture
With a lot of mindful, loving care, Domino made great strides in getting beyond his tendency to be tense, worried, and dicey. Over time he became a joyful and mostly well-behaved fellow, who greeted his caretakers happily, loved to play and was increasingly open to meet new friends. It was a joy reading the daily Shelter notes to find more and more statements like “Domino was a perfect gentleman this morning!”

Still, it wouldn’t be easy to find the right home for this special boy. Domino would need cat-savvy humans to be his protectors, caretakers, and guides, who would be easygoing and playful with him, with a sense of humor about his quirks. He would need a quiet, stable home environment with a very predictable routine that he could count on.

On April 25th he was adopted by Leo and Olivia in Burlington, VT. For his care team it turned out to be a dream come true. Olivia and Leo sent regular updates in the following weeks:

May 1st

We wanted to give you an update on Domino since it has been almost a week!
He has made himself right at home and has adjusted quicker than we dreamed of. He slept in bed with us last night, loves to be cuddled, kissed and scratched. He goes boneless if you pick him up and follows you around the house like a puppy. He loves any surface that is hard and has a good vantage point (i.e. the kitchen counter. We are trying to dissuade him with aluminum foil but that isn’t working🙄). He likes to give us kisses and look out the windows at the birds. He seems to be thriving and knows that this is his home. Here are some photos from the week!

May 9th
Domino is making himself right at home. He has become obsessed with the Catio and MUST go out if we so much as approach the door or touch the doorknob. He loves watching all the birds and dogs go by. We got a new wall tower for the kitchen and hope that we can train him to like that instead of the counter tops (installing that this weekend). He’s been getting his routine down: having energy in the morning, putting himself down for long naps in the afternoon, being social in the evening and then maybe another nap.

If there’s too much movement in the house and he’s getting overstimulated, we all sit down and chill out together. He did seem to get triggered one time by something, with some biting and hissing, so we put him in his room (the office) with some churro and let him calm down. He was good to go after that.

He also likes to use us as climbing trees, give kisses, explore under blankets and in laundry piles and he LOVES water.  He’s definitely keeping us on our toes, but we enjoy the energy and silliness he brings to our house.

May 17th
Domino continues to settle in so well! He loves his home and his spaces. He is enjoying being spoiled and sitting on his TWO new cat towers. One for the kitchen and one for the Catio. He loves to be anywhere we are and is so excited when we are both at home. But we must intentionally do quiet time if we are both home because he can be so excited to be with us all the time that he doesn’t know when to put himself down for a nap. And then he can get a little frisky and cranky.

He continues to explore every possible thing. We tried putting on our previous cat’s old harness to see if he wanted to explore the back patio. He kept meowing at us like he was left out when we spent any time out there. He took right to it and bravely explored every inch! He’s such a brave, inquisitive and loving boy! We will be excited to have you over at some point to show you how well he has adjusted to domestic life.
