Our newest family:  Ashley and her five kittens

– Helen Morrison, Board President

In early August, we received a call about several cats that had been abandoned when the renters of a house moved out.  It was a story made very complicated by the humans involved.  We do tend to complicate our lives, and sometimes, it is the innocents that bear the brunt.
In this case, it involved two white adult cats, a young white cat, and a black polydactyl cat.
Nancy P was able to trap the adult white cat, who turned out to be quite far along in her pregnancy, and to bring her into the Shelter.  We named her Ashley, alluding to the grey smudges on her forehead.

Ashley is a total sweetheart.  Dr. Sally, Pati P, and Debbie did their usual excellent work up.  Dr. Sally also took xrays and low and behold, five little ones were getting ready to make their way into the world.
We bundled Ashley up and off she went to one of our extraordinary foster families, the Gerritts.
Mama Ashley gave birth to her five wee ones on Sept. 1.
Mama and kittens are doing just fine.

From Tori Gerritts:

Sept. 1  She’s doing so great. She’s super sweet and we love her. Still no babies but I sense it’s going to be this week. She’s been trying out new spots in the room and hiding when I’m not in the room. I need to come today to pickup more food and litter. But we have our cameras set up and we’re ready!
(And a little later)  Ashley is in labor and has had 3 so far!!!
(And even later)  She’s doing so good. We have 4. 3 black and one black and white
( And finally, on Sept. 1)  All 5 are here! 2 black and white and 3 black! She did so good!!

Sept. 5   You know what’s kinda crazy? They get visibly bigger every day. I can see personalities coming out too. Everyone’s doing so good!

As of this moment (Sept. 10), the kittens are 10 days old, opening their eyes, exploring, learning all about this new world they are in.  It will be a while before they can go to their forever homes.  But in the meantime, they will be so well socialized and loved by the Gerritts family.
Thank you, Tori, Josh, and Hadley.
