Final Final Friday
-Helen Morrison
Kudos to Gillian Sewake, the director of Discover St. J. She came up with the brilliant and fun idea to have a Street Fair on the last Friday of each Summer month. Railroad Street is closed from Eastern Avenue to Portland St. from about 3 to 9 p.m. Street vendors…for food or goods set up all along Railroad St. Others set up booths and provide activities. Kingdom Animal Shelter has had a tent for all three Final Fridays, beginning in June. First we had our very own volunteer, Christine Nockels, do miniature Pet Portraits from photos that folks had on their Smart Phones. Then, in July, Alicia Benoit Clark helped many folks make cat toys. One little girl made a wonderful wand toy for her imaginary cat. And then, for the last Final Friday in August, Christine Nockels helped folks do Pet Portraits themselves of their own pets. And Alicia came with premade delicious sugar cookies in the various shapes of cats, and kids and adults decorated those cookies with edible icing. There were poster guide of photos of Shelter cats….a tabby, an orange and white, a tuxedo, and a calico, to help folks decorate their cat cookies. It was great fun. KAS will look forward to participating in Final Fridays again next year.
