Dahlia & Fig
Last year in fall, KAS was alerted about two groups of young kittens that had been dropped off in a neighborhood. Friendly residents put out food for the little ones until they could be trapped and be brought to a foster home. The kittens were skittish, under-socialized and took a long time to come out of their shells.
In January, seven of these kitties were ready to be housed at the Shelter in the large Romper Room which has lots of windows looking out into the woods, and is full of cat trees, wall shelves and toys, a fun kindergarten for youngsters.
Dahlia was an orange-white longhair girl with beautiful amber eyes. She always purred up a storm when her caretakers visited. She looked ready to be close to people but kept shying away from being petted. Fig was a handsome long-haired tuxedo boy. Once he came out of hiding, he was a goofy, playful chap.

In July, Geof and Kate from Lisbon NH visited the Shelter several times. They had a soft spot for shy cats and possessed the kind of calmness and patience that all cats love in humans. They spent a long time with the Romper Room kitties. Kate was so patient with Fig, delicately giving him treats. And Dahlia just loved Geof, to the point of flirting with him, and swishing her gorgeous tail at him.
On July 29th these two fluff balls went home with their new friends to Lisbon. Geof and Kate planned to start them out in a safe room that was about the size of the Romper Room, with a gate at the door, and to gradually increase their space in the house.
They sent regular updates:
July 31st
“At first, the kitties were not happy about the move, not surprised considering what they have been through! They are eating some! And using the litter box, they do stay close to each other during the day, but during the evening they do move around.
We've noticed that they are more receptive to Kate's voice, but still pretty uncertain and scared. Considering all, we are enjoying them and are patient, we aren't in any hurry, glad that they are finally home!”
August 5th
“Yesterday evening we decided to leave open the gate and Dahlia wasted no time to explore the living and dining room area, and she loves the stairs, and then "Charlie " Fig was checking things out, he is certainly slowly coming around where he actually allowed me to pet him a little! On the other hand, Dahlia loves getting her neck and back scratched and the longer we pet her the louder her purring gets, and she actually comes to me when I call her!
Charlie is a night owl; when the sun starts setting, he gets playful, exploring, and talking to Dahlia! I accidentally left the kitchen door opened and Dalia waltzed right in like cool! Amazing results in just one week!
They are definitely two different cats from just a week ago. Kate and I are truly happy in having these two in completing our family!”

“Charlie is certainly coming out of his shell. He and Dahlia are now getting familiar with the whole lower part of the house, he’s talking more and he is playing with the cat toys until Dahlia decides it’s her toy and her play time! And it's great seeing the two stretched out sometimes on their backs taking naps on the living room floor. But Dahlia just isn't so sure about the TV.
When the sun goes down, they come alive, and Charlie is allowing some pets. Dahlia is getting more comfortable with everything, she's talking to me more, and comes to me when I call her, of course only on her terms! We are so happy to have these two, they are certainly enjoying the good life of what all cats should have! They have won our hearts!!!”

“Yesterday, Charlie and Dahlia were on my lap trying to help me eat my peanut butter sandwich and get a drink of my milk! This evening they were ripping happily around the house, playing and requiring pets and scratches.”

Ashley & Earl
Last year in August a young pregnant kitty named Ashley was abandoned in an apartment in St. Johnsbury. She went into foster care with volunteer Tori where she gave birth to a litter of five. Four of her babies were adopted in pairs earlier this year, but sweet mama Ashley and her quirky, golden-eyed baby boy Earl took a little longer to find their forever home.
Foster mom Tori described them: Ashley was a vision in white, with a little grey “V” on her forehead and striking green eyes. She was playful, affectionate, and had mastered the art of the gentle head boop. She adored wand dancers, toy mice, and most of all watching her favorite channel of bird tv from her window perch. Earl Grey was her handsome mini me in personality (but fashion-forward in solid grey). With his warm golden eyes and soft coat, he was equal parts playful and professional cuddle consultant. He would happily chase toy mice like it was his full-time job. But if you sat down, he considered it a formal invitation to curl up, claim your lap, and lovingly take over your personal space.

Together, they were friendly, social, and happiest when they were part of the action. They loved people, loved playtime, and loved each other. And they wanted to be the only pets in their future home!
Ashley and Earl were adopted on August 10th by a family in Danville who proudly sent us updates and pictures of their fur babies:
August 15th
“The cats are no longer shy in their new home. They have been playing like crazy at night and just this morning, the top of the dining room table was all askew and toys are scattered to the seven winds! A cat house on the floor was moved sideways. They tend to sleep during daytime and get wild in the evening, playing all night long. They play with each other and do sneak attacks on one another. They have explored the finished basement area and the main floor. They are still hesitant about going up to the 3rd floor, but they are getting there. They are drinking from a water fountain and are eating very well. It’s only been 5 days but it feels like they have been here for a month!
Ashley has been sitting in a lap and loves to be petted! Earl is a bit more standoffish but is friendly and loving. He likes to be petted but is not a lap sitter, yet. Earl gets still startled by loud noises but is doing well. The cats enjoy using the cat tower to stare out the windows and looking out the slider doors.
We love them to death, they are doing great, Ashley is the sweetest little thing, and Earl is a mush ball!”

“The kitties are doing very well!
Initially, Earl was a bit nervous with loud, unfamiliar noises, but he is more comfortable now. We have a clock that makes noises on the half hour and hour and initially Earl was frightened of it. Sometimes Earl has a look in his eye, like he has a little devil in him! He does not like to be picked up but enjoys sitting next to us on the couch. He runs around at full speed and then crashes for a nap. We have increased his food a bit as Earl was pushing Ashley out of the way to get to her portion.

Ashley enjoys sitting on the cat tower close to the slider doors and watches hummingbirds visit the feeders. Ashley is our best buddy on the couch, leans into us and cuddles up next to us. Ashley is gorgeous, a little sweetheart and the sweetest cat, with occasional bouts of catitude!
Ashley and Earl are crazy kitties! They run through the entire house at about 100 mph and sound like a herd of elephants.
Everyone is very happy here, the cats are very sweet and have settled in well, Earl is very funny! We are so happy with them and we love them both!”

Olivia
When Olivia came to KAS, she was an 8-month-old kitten with the softest fluffy fur and beautiful tail. Sadly, her owner had become homeless and had to surrender Olivia to the Shelter.
Olivia was social, loving and playful. She loved to be around people, sit on a shoulder to purr into one’s ear, or lounge on a sunny windowsill to watch what was going on outside. She was the cutest little thing and a very good girl.

Lesa from Sutton, Vt, found Olivia irresistible. She applied to adopt her and was so excited to take Olivia home. She had fostered for KAS in the past and her animals were everything to her -- horses, dogs or cats, they got the best of care and love at Lesa’s home. Her Australian Shepherd, Summer, was a calm, sweet dog who would welcome a kitty gently into the house.
Lesa soon sent photos of Olivia and reported that Olivia and Summer had their first nose to nose!

Loki
Loki came to KAS as a 1-year-old calm little fellow. He was a very sweet boy who loved belly rubs, curling up on our laps and playing with his spring toys. Loki was said to be friendly with dogs, children, and people of all ages. He hadn't lived with other cats, but at the shelter he was very interested in his playful kitty neighbors. He was a wonderfully patient, laid-back little guy who got along with everybody.

Beth and Tom from Jericho, Vt were looking for a family cat who would be good with visiting young children and seniors alike. Loki sounded like a good match, and after their visit at the Shelter they were certain he would be a perfect fit! They liked how interactive and playful he was. It seemed he would happily join the whole family in their daily activities.
They had a spacious, light and bright, cat savvy home where Loki would be doted on and played with. Their love for animals showed in how they cared for their 25-year-old box turtle Pearl, who had the life of Riley, a warm safe spot in winter above a garage and a wonderful enclosure in the summer where he could browse about and look for snails and worms. They even had made arrangements for Pearl, should he outlive them, which was possible since box turtles can live 100 years!
Loki went home on August 18th. Beth sent an update on the next day:
“All is excellent so far! Our trip home was uneventful, though Loki was very stressed so we kept cool air flowing and we made it home safely.
We brought him to the guest room first where we set up a litter box and a second set of food bowls, and he has made that room his safe space. It took about 4 hours to make the full tour of our house - ceiling fans are especially scary as is traffic going by the house. A stuffed tiger was also a total terror so it is in the closet for now.
He initially fell asleep with his head on my shoulder last night, then seemed to have explored the house last night and even used the downstairs litter box successfully.
This morning he quickly figured out the magic drawer where food comes from and is eating well. He was initially afraid of the water fountain but is drinking well from it now.
He seems quite happy!
Today we will get two new cat posts so I’m sure there will be some great pics as he explores those. Thank you all for your time and effort, we are so appreciative. We love Loki and know he will fit into our family perfectly!”

Hamish
3-year-old Hamish looked like he had been on the losing end of a few battles when he arrived at the Shelter in July, but he was still looking for love and a gentle touch.
He had been living on the streets for quite a while. Several kind souls fed him, sometimes giving him shelter. He was finally trapped and brought to KAS. He was a mess with scarring all around his face and a gash in his front leg that needed stitches. He was thin and scruffy. His fur was very dirty with a sticky, grey substance. And he tested positive for FIV, feline immunodeficiency virus which weakens a cat's immune system and is transmitted through deep bites. Poor chap!
Hamish soon felt much better after our fabulous vet team was done with medical treatments and a thorough cleaning. For three weeks he basically slept in his warm, comfy room, only getting up to eat, drink and use his litter box, he was bone tired.

Then, one day Hamish was ready to play! He loved the wand toys and being brushed.
Here he was with us, safe and sound. He was making biscuits and watching out his window into the kitchen area, interested in what all the humans were doing. He was sweet. He was healing. He was learning to play. He was filling out and looking so much better. He was a LOVE.

Hamish caught the eye of Katie and her family from Bradford, Vt. They quickly decided to give him a loving home and adopted him on August 23rd.
When Hamish first got home, Katie reported that he immediately came out of his carrier and went behind the couch. They gave him space. After a few hours, he came out, let Katie pet his chin. He was eating well and began exploring the house in the late afternoon. By the end of the day, Hamish was sitting on their lap, making biscuits.
The family was SO happy with how Hamish was doing in his new home. Hamish was hanging out with them; he played a bit with toys, and he was a talker.
Katie felt that Hamish had so much love inside of him. She said they were thrilled with him and were all very happy.
A day later, Katie told us that Hamish was now called Luke or Lukey Paws.
Luke was getting super playful with his family in between naps and snuggles.
Katie stated that his transition couldn't have been going better and they were totally in love with him.

A week later Katie wrote:
“I wanted to send you a few more pictures and an update on how our boy is doing! He has settled right into our little family, and we love him so dearly. His sweet personality has really come out as he’s gotten more comfortable with us. It turns out this boy is such a funny playful and vocal little man! He loves snuggling with us but also loves to play and scamper around and has quite a meow when he wants food or lovins. He especially likes snuggling on the couch with us and sitting in the windows looking out at the birds and he seems really happy here with us.
We wanted to thank you and all the staff at the shelter for rescuing this sweet boy and taking such good care of him until he could join our family. Thank you all for everything you do!”
After he had been home for 2 weeks, Katie reported that Luke was their "Precious Prince", they loved him and they felt that Luke was very happy at home. He was eating well, loved his wand toys and he was very playful. Luke was nocturnal and they were working on keeping him up during the day so that he wouldn't wake up the family at night!

Ozzy
Ozzy was an affectionate 1.5-year-old boy who liked to snuggle and play. He was an explorer, always busy looking for new places and things to discover. He liked to be loved on, reassured, and played-with. Being a little insecure, he got worried and stressed around other cats at the shelter. But cooped up in a room on his own he would get all worked up and sometimes nip his caretakers. He was a handful!

Ozzy was the perfect youthful match for a young couple, Jacob and Charlotte from Whitefield, NH. They were both great animal lovers and very experienced in caretaking of family pets and pet sitting.
When they visited Ozzy at the Shelter, they were right on the floor playing with him. Ozzy was lying over Jacob's arm like a wet towel and he cried when they left.
Ozzy was soon adopted and settled in well from the start.
During his first night home, he figured out how to turn on the computer!
There were some loud noises like motorcycles going by, that were frightening him at first, but he was getting used to it.
