Muffin
Muffin is a sweet, 1-year-old, spirited kitty. She was taken in as a single kitten by a senior person, who soon felt overwhelmed by her boundless kitten energy and had to give her up.
Muffin was housed in the youth-section of the Shelter where she could socialize with other cats of her age. Her world had been very small and restricted. Now she was able to gain confidence in being a lively, young cat! She learned how to play nicely with other youngsters. She enjoyed roaming freely with her new friends and greeting visitors. She jumped and raced around to her heart’s delight.

On June 6th, Muffin found her perfect home with a young family with children in Vermont.
The family wrote regular updates:
June 11th: Muffin is doing GREAT, and we love her so much! She does have some shyness and there is some fear in curiosity. She is still keeping to one side of the house in two rooms most of the time, but she is definitely coming out of her shell and exploring, although extremely cautiously. While this week has been busy, we are recognizing that she hates being alone, so we have someone with her at home most of the time.
So far, she loves to sit and watch tv with us on the couch, playing with the kids, and looking out the window! A great match for us!

June 19th: Muffin is adjusting to our home very well!
We were opening up our house room by room for her, and as of the last few nights she has had full reign of the house with doors open to visit us if she needs anything from her humans!
We have also just pared down to one litter box (we had a few sprinkled through the house to help her get used to it), and so far so great! We are so happy with her little kitty personality; she fits in great with us!

Aurora
When 1-year-old Aurora arrived at the Shelter, she was nervous at first, but as she relaxed, we got to know her sweet self. She was very gentle and charming. Aurora had a unique way of making biscuits in the air, alternating paws, and raising them high, to stretch and knead.
Aurora was soon adopted to a good home…but when she met the resident male cat, Aurora showed no tolerance for sharing the house with him. The resident canine, on the other hand, was smothered in hugs and kisses: Aurora turned out to be a dog-lover!

After being returned to the Shelter, Aurora didn’t have to wait long for an opportunity to find love and friendship on her own terms. Maria from Waterford took her home on June 7th and introduced her to her gentle pup River.
Maria sent several updates in the following weeks:
June 7th
As soon as I put Aurora in her safe space, she came right out and was with River; no barking or chasing at all. The two girls seem to like each other. The screened-in porch is heaven to Aurora. She seems super relaxed, and I am supervising them.

It is like Aurora was meant to be here. I do believe that she prefers River to me.
She has no interest in being in her safe room. She wants to be with us and slept on the bed with us during her first night. She loves the screened-in porch and is very interested in the birds and sounds. It has been a joy; there hasn't been a second she hasn't wanted to be right next to us. Aurora needed us and we needed her!

Things are going great! I never expected this. There have been no problems between Aurora and River. I mean none! I hear them playing with cat toys late at night. They sleep together.
Aurora also met Mia, my son’s dog, who has some behavioral issues. I think Aurora is like me and is missing the fear gene! There was no barking, no chasing, just curiosity. Aurora prefers River of course. They only stayed an hour and Aurora handled herself like the queen she is.
She has explored everywhere in the house. When River and I go out to work in the yard in the afternoon, Aurora naps on a chair and then is happy to rest again with River before dinner. It really is amazing, different species and all that!
When River goes outside, Aurora waits for her at the screen door. She follows us everywhere. It’s like she has been here forever. Thank you so much! I love her so much!

Things continue to be a seamless transition here. No way I could have predicted how well things have gone. I have introduced new pets to existing pets in the past and it has NEVER been this smooth.
June 30th
Aurora loves the screened in porch and spends most of her time there, bird watching and listening. She loved the rain the other day and stretched her body up to reach it. She is a real joy. Very social with guests.
She greets me when I come in from outside and my bed is her favorite place to sleep. I keep a watchful eye on her as she is desperate to escape!
River and Aurora play at night with toys and when I wake up in the morning, River has cat hair all over her from their nighttime shenanigans! They come and wake me up in the morning together, ready for breakfast!
Aurora has added so much to my life. I love her purring and how she lays all over me. It is wonderful. We are all very happy and love her forever!! Thank you!

Sage & Kimchi
Fostering kittens for a Shelter takes special skill, lots of loving care, and -- most challenging of all -- the ability to let those babies go to their forever homes. But foster parents at Kingdom Animal Shelter always have first choice to adopt their littles…which happens quite regularly!
Over the years, foster mom Pat had tended beautifully to many kittens in her foster kindergarten in North Danville without being seriously tempted to keep any of them. She had handed her foster kids over to their happy adopters with good cheer and sometimes a tear in her eyes. But among her latest foster litter, a very special pair of kittens insisted on adopting their foster mom for life…

She had handed her foster kids over to their happy adopters with good cheer and sometimes a tear in her eyes. But among her latest foster litter, a very special pair of kittens insisted on adopting their foster mom for life…
Pat had described the siblings: “Our beautiful tricolor petite girl Sage is very delicate, and she is the only biscuit maker in the litter. She would spend all day on my lap if I let her, as she loves her snuggles, and her purring never stops. Our baby girl is so sweet! Her brother Kimchi is an absolutely gorgeous big white boy with just a kiss of orange on his ears and his tail. He is a total mama's boy and wants to spend all his time lying on my lap being petted. When I stay long enough, he will fall asleep. They don't come any sweeter than these two kittens…”
Pat adopted Sage and Kimchi on June 20th and was over the moon happy with her decision. They made themselves fully at home and got along well with the resident dogs. Only Poppy, the senior feline of the house, had some reservations. But Poppy got extra portions of TLC and the sole right of sleeping in the family bed!

Jerry
Another happy ‘foster failure’ in June was little Jerry, a handsome Lynx Point Siamese, who snuggled his way into foster mom Tori’s heart. Jerry was thrilled to stay with his beloved family of humans and resident cats, and also with his favorite sister Cherry Garcia, who, due to a congenital heart defect, was under Tori’s permanent care. Jerry was adopted on June 27th.
As we know: “There is always space for one more!”

Ruthie
Young Ruthie was surrendered to the Shelter in mid-winter. She had been sick for a while, and her family were at a loss what to do about it. Ruthie was skinny, disheveled and uncomfortable from itchy skin allergies, feeling poorly due to food sensitivities and bladder issues. Her belly felt hot to the touch and swollen. She needed help.

Over the timespan of several months, our Shelter vet Dr. Sally treated Ruthie with medicine, special diet and supplements until she blossomed into a cheerful little beauty. She became sleek and glossy. She had an adorable personality: social, smart and adventurous. She charmed all our Shelter volunteers with her outgoing, affectionate disposition.
Ruthie made friends with some of the other young cats, but her focus was on humans. What a flirt she was! We felt that she wouldn’t mind at all being an only pet, especially if her family had lots of time for her.
Mary Lewis and Anna from Randolph, VT, instantly fell in love and adopted Ruthie on June 28th.
On July 1st, we heard through adoption counselor Nancy: “Ruthie is doing just great, really, really great! She is eating well, using her litter box and is exploring everywhere in her new home. Ruthie is very affectionate. She slept with Mary Lewis during the first night and cuddled with Anna in the morning. Mary Lewis and Anna are so happy with Ruthie! They say that Ruthie is tons of fun. She is eating, using the litter box and at times has gone 70 miles per hour racing from one room to another! “
Brittany
In late fall, a very handsome long-hair cat suddenly appeared in a neighborhood in town. She looked like an abandoned show cat who couldn’t believe what had happened to her. Brittany was taken into the Shelter, and we got to know her sweet and complicated sides.
On the one hand she was friendly and social, liked company and being around people. She loved it when one had a conversation with her, tilting her head and listening. But she accepted petting only in short doses and quickly became irritable if one didn't pay close attention to her signals.
Brittany hated being around other cats and being confined. Although she had her own spacious room, being closed-in and seeing other cats in her vicinity, made her miserable. She sometimes took it out on her caretakers with swatting and hissing.

We received several adoption applications for Brittany, mostly for her very good looks. But it took 8 months until the right adopter came along, who we felt would be able to bring out the best in her.
Peg from Lyndon, VT, was looking for a single cat who would be a companionable presence in her home without being needy and right in her face. Brittany was looking for a nice house to roam freely, with a person who didn’t overwhelm her with expectations and would let her be herself. It seemed like a great match. Peg adopted Brittany on June 30th.

After two days, Peg sent an update with photos:
“Brittany spent the first day adapting slowly, but there was no aggressive behavior at all. She just kept her distance. I went into her safe-room every couple of hours and sat and talked to her. She did eat and drink well, and gradually relaxed.
This morning when I went in, she came to greet me, rubbed against my legs and jumped up on the bed, came over and let me pet her. She seems to really like hanging out on the bed and seems now very relaxed. I think she will be an awesome companion!
Thanks for everything.”

Peg reported that after a couple of days she let Brittany out of her initial room to explore the main part of the house. In the following weeks Peg gradually opened the basement and attic for her to discover. Brittany loved to lounge on her two tall cat trees from where she could watch birds in the yard. She continued to be peaceful and relaxed. Peg’s bed became her favorite place to curl up and rest. When guests arrived, they were greeted graciously by Brittany, and she allowed them to pet her!
