Stuart & Ashton
The brothers Stuart and Ashton were rescued from a feral cat colony last year in July, along with two sisters. They were great kittens, very affectionate and playful. As they grew up together, it became obvious that Stuart was losing his sight, due to a congenital eye condition.
He was a gorgeous little tabby tiger and a sweet baby boy. He loved being held in the crook of one’s arm and being carried around. You wouldn't have known when you watched Stuart happily racing around, that he was nearly blind. His other senses were highly alert so that he got around just as well as his seeing brother Ashton. Stuart was super playful and athletic. He loved wrestling with Ashton and enjoyed his toys very much. He liked to jump after fishing pole toys, sensing their movement in the air and hearing them swish. He also liked to climb on a cat tree and curl up in a cozy cave.
Ashton was a sweet, silky black, laid-back little man. He enjoyed being picked up and petted and purred loudly. He had lots of fun playing with his brother.
At the Shelter, the boys were super adventurous and especially loved exploring the kitchen. Stuart was frequently found nosing around inside an open dishwasher or other appliances…We had to keep an extra two eyes on Stuart to keep him out of trouble!

The kittens were adopted on March 16th by Katie and Chris, a young couple from White River Junction. Katie and Chris had visited the boys and done a lot of thinking about them in their home, what would keep the cats safe, and what their needs would be. They had a three-story home, with lots of windows and a three-season porch. They planned on starting the cats out slowly on the first level of the house, and as they acclimated, a bit more would be opened up. It would be so interesting to find out how Stuart would navigate stairs for the first time in his young life!

“Things are going very well with the boys. Ashton had a breakthrough day yesterday. He had been a little more skittish, but last night he was playing all evening, jumping up and down with us on the couch, and cuddling. He is also eating much better than he was during the first few days, so he really seems to have made a big turnaround yesterday. This morning, he is off to a great start as well.
Stuart is doing great as well. He is very smart and has learned the lay of the land for the first floor, which is great. He definitely still enjoys loading the dishwasher! He has been eating and drinking normally. Both are doing great with the litter boxes and have been going normally without issues.

I wanted to share an update on how the boys are doing. Overall, everything is going very well! Ashton has been settling in nicely. He was hiding a bit during daytime at first, but over the last couple of days he’s been much more comfortable and is now hanging out with us throughout the day. He still gets a little skittish with certain new noises—like doors shutting or the dreaded hairdryer—but we can tell he’s gaining confidence. At night, he’s quite the little hunter—his favorite “prey” being my socks from the laundry basket, which he proudly leaves in the living room for us to find in the morning. It took Chris and me a little while to figure out why my socks kept ending up there! He also ventured out onto the screened-in porch the other day and really enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels, which was great to see.
Stuart is doing really great as well. He’s incredibly smart—he quickly learned the stairs and even figured out how to get over the gate. After that, he took some time exploring up and down the stairs and now navigates them confidently. I think the different textures (carpet upstairs, hardwood on the main level, and cement in the basement) have helped him learn. He’s been playing a lot, loves his cat trees, and continues to impress us with how well he gets around the house. He quickly learned where his feeding spot is, and loves cuddling on the couch with us at night.

They’re both eating well, using the litter box without any issues, and have really settled in. We’re so happy to have them and are really enjoying their company.

I wanted to give you another update about the boys. They’re both doing very well and seem completely at home. They’ve been eating well and settling into a nice routine. We recently introduced an automatic feeder for breakfast—on day one, they were hesitant, but by day two, they went right over and started eating, so that’s been a success.
Ashton has been doing great around the house. He still loves hunting in the basement and proudly bringing us his findings in the morning. He’s also taken a real liking to the screened-in front porch—on warmer days, we crack the door, and he can’t wait to get out there. Between his cat tree and watching (and chasing) the birds around from the screened-in area, he’s having a great time.
Stuart seems to know every inch of the house now and has mastered the stairs, which has been wonderful to see. It’s honestly hard to believe he’s blind because he navigates so confidently and really hasn’thad any big incidents since being here (minor bumps into the wall occasionally). He also enjoys the screened-in porch--he’s a bit more hesitant than Ashton when he is out there, but he hears the birds and enjoys it.
They love to snuggle when they’re not chasing each other around the house.
Thanks again for everything! Katie and Chris

Percy
In January, a good Samaritan called about a very friendly male tuxedo stray that she had rescued from the severe winter cold. She tended to him in her attic, got him neutered and vaccinated. But she hadcats and couldn’t keep another. We took him to the Shelter as soon as a space opened.
Percy was a gentle 2-year-old boy with golden eyes. He was quite shy at first, not eating and hiding in his cozy cat cave. But he soon loved his chin scratched by his caretakers and would occasionally come forward for full body pets with lots of purring. He was sensitive, calm and affectionate. But he didn’t like the sight of other cats, so we were looking for a place where he would be cherished as an only pet.
In March, Alaina from Montpelier came for a private visit to meet Percy. He had been on her mind since she saw him on the KAS website the previous week. She joked that it felt like a first date. Percy liked Alaina right away and they seemed a great match.
Alaina was very cat-savvy and had excellent references for the care of her previous two kitties. She lived in a quiet apartment and worked half-time from home. Percy would be her only cat companion, very much loved and spoiled. Percy went home with Alaina on March 12th.
We received regular updates on Mr. Percy:

Hi! Things are going pretty well, though Percy is only coming out from under the couch at night when I’m in bed. He wasn’t eating initially, but now is eating, using his litter box and playing. I invested in Feliway and he was out long enough while I was up to get my first picture of him. I’m working on helping him build his confidence and feel safe here but have loved hearing him throw his toys around. I love waking up to find out what antics he has gotten into while I was asleep, it always makes me laugh!

He has been doing great and warming up to his new spot. Last night we played for a few hours and this morning he has been eating while I’m up and not just at night.

Percy is doing great! He has really been coming out of his shell in the last few days. He eats in front of me now, plays with his toys with me, and I was able to give him full body pets and listen to him purrraway while we watched TV last night 😃
He is a very good boy indeed and making lots of progress! Initially he wasn’t eating or coming out from under the couch, so this is good! I have a few friends who have been looking forward to meeting him when he is ready and they love cheering him online from afar! They love him already! I just want him to get used to the voices of others first, before inviting anybody in person, so he can ease in.

He’s so smart! Hard to get any work done watching him play with his new toy. His little meow is so sweet. He is getting to know the routine and tell me he wants his breakfast 😆

Alexa
Remember little Addie? She came to us in late August 2025, her face a mess from an attack by a predator. With the loving care and skilled attention by our veterinary team and volunteers, Addie’s face healed well and she was adopted by Polly and Jim from Wheelock, VT.

As Addie settled beautifully into her new home, Polly and Jim felt that they had room for another rescue kitty in their spacious home and hearts. Addie had siblings. Several of them had been trapped as strays and placed, first into foster care, then into the Shelter. Addie had come to KAS as a baby, but her siblings were already half-grown when they were rescued, therefore they were still quite shy. Alexa was the shyest of them all.
Moved by Alexa’s poor chances for adoption, Polly and Jim decided to take her. They hoped that over time Addie’s confidence would help her sister come out of her shell and become an active part of the family. Alexa, or Lexy, as she was soon named, arrived home on March 8th.

Lexy has chosen to stay under the sofa. Addie visits. We have food and litter nearby. We wait. We play music and talk softly to her. It’s slow. I was able to pet her head just once. Progress in small steps. Addie is a joy. Nothing bothers her. She is an amazing communicator. If she can’t get through to Lexy, then I don’t think anyone can.
Up early, couldn’t sleep. Started doing some chores. I felt eyes on me, and I turned around to see this little face looking out at me from the Living room. Please keep sending positive energy our way. It’s working!!
We have no end of miracles as far as Lexy is concerned. She just joined Addie and I in a game of Laser. It was only a few minutes, but this is BIG stuff. I am so encouraged but still must stay focused on going slow. Baby steps. She is so worth it.

Addie adopted the box from my new boots as her napping place. She is such fun to be around. She had taken to sleeping on my pillow for a few hours each night.
Lexy remains under the couch all day. She comes out in the early morning, about 5 am. She looks for Addie and me through the living room window. This morning for the first time she called to us. Once we joined her, she watched Addie play with the wand toys and the laser. I can see that she wants to join in but is still too scared. She stays under or near the couch not venturing far from her comfort zone. In the afternoon I sit on the floor with my back to the couch and talk to her. We have cat calming music playing most of the time when we are not in the room.
A new thing we have been doing is leaving recently worn clothing, like a tee shirt on the living room floor at night. Something with our scent on it. Usually, I find she has moved it to a different spot in the room by the morning.
My heart breaks for her shyness and fearfulness. But we are making progress one day at a time.
On March 18th Polly reported:
Well, as you know, Lexy has spent every day under the couch for almost three weeks. Jim and I would peer under and talk to her being careful not to be too loud and not stare at her. She allowed her fur to be stroked a couple of times. Sometimes she would accept treats from me.
She would come out only at night to eat and use the litter box. Every day I would get up early and Addie and I would play with toys just near her. The TV is tuned to calming music (thanks to YouTube for the cat music) unless we watch the news or something else. We left our unwashed tee shirts on the living room floor every night for the past week.
In the evening Addie and I play with the laser. Lexy always seemed to want to play but fear held her back. Tonight she was very brave. She came out and started chasing the light. Addie was incredible. She perched near me and just watched. She didn’t interfere. Lexy played for a good 20 minutes. Addie sat quietly not a peep.
When I finally turned the light off Addie jumped down and went over to Lexy, they stared at each other for only a couple of moments and then Lexy slowly went back to her safe zone under the couch. She didn’t panic or bolt. She simply walked back to her spot.
I’m still astonished but incredibly relieved. Thanks again for all your support. It means so much to us!
