Senior Cats at the Shelter

Written by Helen Morrison, President, Board of Directors

I remember, some years ago, when we were still in the other Shelter on Memorial Drive, an elderly couple calling, wishing to surrender their beloved kitty, Bella.  They were having to move to a nursing home.  Bella was 8 years old, and their very precious companion.  But the nursing home did not allow pets.  They had called shelters all around, and none would take any cats 8 years old or older.  The couple were so desperate to find a good place for their sweet Bella.  Someone suggested that they call us, that we might take her, when no one else would.  They called and we agreed to take Bella.  She was wonderful.  We were able to find her the perfect home with a retired nurse.  I haven’t checked in lately.  But when I last did, they were so happy, two little peas in a pod.  The older couple had sent along a very precious letter:  “What Bella Likes”.  Here is some of the list:

  • Likes to cuddle, sit on your lap, sleep with you in bed
  • Loves to have her head and nose softly petted and massaged
  • Loves to chase a laser light, including in a bag
  • Loves her bed placed in front of a warm place
  • Loves the sun
  • Likes a window to sit on
  • Loves to eat grass.  We bring it in for her
  • Has an incredible triple purr

I remember reading it and being overwhelmed with sadness that this sweet elder kitty, who was so well-loved and so well-known, might have met a very sad fate.  But she didn’t.  She came to us.
For that, I am so incredibly grateful.

And so, let me introduce you to our in-house senior kitties who are looking for the perfect home.
