The Venerable Ones

Okay….I am IN LOVE. Again. It is Squeaks. Squeaks is one of the sweetest and dear kitties ever. She has this adorable little meow. When she first came to us, she was so scared, so obviously wondering what on earth had happened. She stayed curled up in her carrier…not venturing out at all, for anything. She would just respond to us with these tiny little squeaks. We moved her to one of our lovely Med Suite rooms…with a cot for folks to lie on, a neat cat tower, a big window to look out of. She is getting more comfortable. She does this funny thing…scooting from her carrier to under the bed and back. Next, she stops a bit for a snack. And she also stops a bit for a quick petting and a purr. Now, she hangs out, winds around your feet, so that you can pet her just a bit longer. All of this is accompanied by tiny little squeaks. “Squeaks” represents something very special about Kingdom Animal Shelter.
You see, Squeaks is twelve years old. And Squeaks was adopted from KAS as a kitten in 2012.
She came back to KAS because her human passed away. This is so hard on a kitty…to be settled in a loving home, and then their whole world is turned upside down when their human is gone.
We have five kitties in shelter care right now who were adopted from us some years ago…and their persons passed away. And we have had several more over the past months, in the same situation, who have since been adopted out to new and loving homes.
And here is what is so very special about our Shelter. When people adopt from us, we let them know that if anything happens to them, if they can’t care for them anymore, we will take the kitty back into our care. You have no idea how relieved adopters are when they hear that.
To my knowledge, we are the only Shelter that makes a point of making that clear to adopters and following through on it. Our care is not just the initial care when we first receive the cat.
Our care carries through. We help with advice all along, if need be. And when the cat’s life-long, forever home is no longer available, we step in, and offer new beginnings to these often elderly beings. We truly love them and care for them, if we are aware, until their own end comes. And that does the heart good! It does all the hearts good!!!
