Herbie
Herbie’s owners were at their wits end when they brought him to the animal hospital in Ryegate with yet another serious wound from a fight with a neighboring pet. They couldn’t afford his ongoing emergency care and hoped to surrender him.
Dr. Jill took this handsome 5-year-old boy into her care. She patched him up and contacted KAS, who gladly took him in.
At the Shelter, Herbie proved to be super friendly and playful. He was a socialite and a real gentleman cat with his human caretakers, wanting to share his love and constantly asking for playtime. He showed a desire of playing “Cat the Ripper” with his neighbors and therefore had to stay separate in his own room.
It was clear that Herbie needed to be the only cat in a fun-loving household where he could happily roam indoors. His people would have to meet his exuberance with equal playfulness.

Miranda from Lyndonville seemed the perfect match of youthful energy for Mr. Active Boy. She took him home on April 4th.
On May 4th Miranda wrote:
“Herbie is doing wonderfully and is an amazing furry addition to my little tribe. We adore him!
He has transformed over the past month. He was very verbal when we met, and he has just started talking more to me. I love him to death but if I am not giving him his desired attention whatever I'm doing becomes the target lol.
He is basically a dog in most of his antics. I jokingly said to him while giving him a treat to sit and he actually did. We have been working on a few treat-prompted tricks including sitting, standing, and spinning, along with some harness exposure, all of which he is taking in stride.

He loves everything. He's been amazing with my girlfriend’s 9-year-old and adores to play with anyone any time. We already have a small, destroyed toy pile. He's a total love and is always sleeping next to me. It started with pillow stealing but quickly moved to sleeping in my arms most days. I honestly don't think I could have found a better cat for me.”

Tiggey
Young Tiggey was sadly surrendered by his family who couldn’t care for him anymore. He is a gorgeous Maine Coon with a lovely personality who had grown up with kids and dogs.
His long fur was felted, so it needed to be shaved into a “lion cut.” He couldn’t wait to get out of his quarantine condo and kept throwing his litter all over the place.
Shortly before Tiggey’s arrival, Liz from Burlington had inquired about a cat who might like to live with kids and dogs and another cat.
The family visited him soon, they hit it off, and Tiggey went home to Burlington on April 1st.

“Things are going very well with Tiggey. The kids have renamed him Toby. The dogs love him! He is very friendly and curious. Toby is eating well and using the litter box in the basement (and all the litter stays in!)
Overall, we are so, so happy with him. You did a perfect match making job. He is highly affectionate and loves attention, which is great for us because there are so many of us to give him the love.”
The older family cat Fang and young Toby are still getting used to each other’s presence in the house. But with lots of space and tons of love on both sides, their slow introduction is going in the right direction towards a peaceful co-existence.

Greta
Little Greta came to the Shelter at the age of 7 months. As a tiny baby she had been given as a pet to an elderly person. A few months later the family wanted to rehome her because Greta was getting to be too much of a hand full, climbing the walls & curtains. She would also run and hide from strangers.
At the Shelter Greta appeared to be a little nervous and insecure but very grateful for human company. She was gentle, showed no signs of being feral and had normal kitten energy.
Greta was introduced to other friendly young cats of her age and behaved herself very well, although she was timid and easily robbed of her food portion. Obviously, she had missed learning how to stand up to some litter mates.
One month later this sweet little girl was adopted by Alice in Danville, who shares a home with her gentle cat-friendly dog Sebastian.

“Hi, here is a picture of Greta playing. She’s doing great in every way! She loves to explore and play and cuddle, too. Greta and dog Sebastian are co-existing. There is no animosity. Greta is still a bit frightened by him. But I have no doubt that they will develop a friendship. The timing is theirs, of course!”

Eliza Doolittle
Eliza is a gorgeous Maine Coon mix, 6 years of age. Her light-green eyes seem to shed light. As a true socialite she easily made friends in her previous home with guests and loved to have company. She didn't like to be left alone for long periods of time.
She was surrendered by her owners because they worked very long days and felt that Eliza was lonely. They were heartbroken to give her up.
Eliza is intelligent, calm and friendly and has her own mind. At the Shelter she was afraid of the other cats and looked forward to finding her very own human, without other pets around. To polish up her resume she helped our youngest volunteers with their Latin homework. She kept having trouble with hairballs and needed regular “lion cuts” to keep her from ingesting too much fur. She looked pretty darn cute after coming from the hairdresser!

Eliza caught the eye of Grant from Burlington, who visited her at the Shelter. Eliza, who had been picky with her human caretakers, was instantly enamored with Grant. He took her home to Burlington on April 15. Very soon Grant sent a video of Eliza on his lap, giving him kisses.

Their adoption counselor Nancy wrote on April 18:
“I was in contact with Grant today regarding Eliza Doolittle.
When Grant leaves for work, he feels that Eliza is doing well. She does not seem stressed when he gets home for lunch and at night, and she is always waiting at the door when he arrives.
Grant says that she is adjusting better than he could ever have hoped.
Eliza sleeps with Grant every night and he stated that she is a "very considerate bed mate."
Eliza is affectionate, she follows Grant around and jumps on his lap.
Overall, Eliza seems very happy with Grant.”
Yaay Eliza!

Queenie, Washington and Alaska
These three young, gentle kitties came from a hoarding situation in an abandoned trailer. They were very happy to move to a clean and uplifted space in the Shelter. During the first days of their residency Alaska could be found curled up in a clean litter box – probably the cleanest place she had known in her life!
Once they overcame their initial shyness, they were great fun to watch roaming around and looking for adventures. Cross-eyed Washington was adorable and soon allowed being petted. Gray-and-white Alaska was the boldest. Queenie, who might be their mom, would cautiously watch out for everybody, but she also became more and more playful and curious.

They were adopted on April 22 by Dave and Cathy in Francistown, NH, who had recently lost their beloved cats to old age.
On May 5th Cathy wrote:
“I have been meaning to send an update of the kids. They are doing quite fine! They have made themselves at home here and are having a lot of fun exploring. They like to be in the same area as us but are still not quite sure they want us to pick them up just yet. When I feed them, I can give them a pat.

They are all developing their own personalities. Alaska is definitely the ringleader, Washington is the lover and Queenie hangs back and lets them get into mischief!
Our wooden posts all over the house have provided a lot of climbing opportunities. Dave and I could not be happier watching them as they run and play with one another!
I have attached a few photos, it's hard to get them all at once!
