A Dapper Dude: Peaches

-Helen Morrison

At the end of August, we received a call from some folks saying they had a stray cat hanging around their house and would we take him in.  We agreed.  And what a good thing we did, because Peaches is one of the friendliest, most engaging, cuddly cats we have had in a long time.  He just melts your heart.  This sweet 7 year old boy is probably part Persian, part Himalayan.  He has long, creamy buff fur that was quite matted when he came to us.  Our clinic team of Dr. Sally Schlueter and Andrea Chiesa, CVT, went to work to give him a lion cut to ease the stress of all those mats.  It was a bit like watching the shearing of a sheep.  And they began to assess his health.  He was certainly lively enough.  But his eyes indicated some sort of infection, probably viral.  And his urine and stool also hinted at some issues.  These were later revealed to be a urinary tract infection, some crystals, and some sort of issues with his intestinal tract.

As time has gone by, Peaches is looking better and better...and he knows it.  His eyes look clear, his beautiful fur is growing back, he is agile and inquisitive.
But as some issues continued with Peaches, we had an abdominal ultrasound done on Peaches, right in our Medical Suite.  Sadly, we discovered that Peaches has a mass in his colon which is most probably cancer.  So, our Precious Peaches has shifted from us making him well again to him being our boy in end-of-life care.  Dr. Sally and Andrea have devised a care plan that will keep him comfortable and able to enjoy all the cuddles and pats that will be available to him by our volunteers.  It is something we have learned to do over the past year...as part of our overall care of cats waiting for a home….to tend to those cats that are in Hospice Care.  We are looking for a foster for Peaches, a quiet home with someone who is cat savvy and can spend lots of time with him, and can care for some of his health related issues that are present or will arise.  Kingdom Animal Shelter will be right there, supplying support and any medical needs.  If you could be that person or know someone who could be, please let us know.  Peaches would be so excited he would shout for joy.
