My Good Luck has been Black Cats
By Rod Lauman, Board Member

At the Shelter and in foster homes we are currently having a wonderful black flood of cats and kittens. These are mostly coming from a large horde of black cats and kittens from just one location that we are helping with.

I think that most everyone has heard all the superstitions surrounding black cats. They are supposedly bad luck, and in the past were the witch's companion, her familiar. To this day, this image is put in our minds at Halloween with the black cat sitting on the pumpkin next to the witch. They also do not show up well in photographs and therefore don't attract as much attention on Petfinder and other adoption sites as cats of other colors for potential adopters.

Did you know that all cats genetically have only 3 base colors and that other colors and patterns that you see are just a mix of black, white, and orange? Black is a very dominant color and you will see many of those along with a mix of white which either produces the Tuxedos or the various shades of gray. On the calicos, you see all three.

Back around 10 years ago at our old Shelter on Memorial Drive we also had a big influx of black cats. At that point, I had just lost due to old age the 3 cats that I had for 18 years prior to that. So, I was in the market to get some new cats as my house seemed empty without cats in it. I saw all the black cats and also knew the silly superstitions and also knew that they were harder to adopt so I went for it and adopted Colleen, Cody, and Rambler who are all black. The following year I adopted Wilbur and then Curtis, following along in the black theme. Curtis was very elderly when I adopted him, but he still gave my home joy for 3 1/2 years.

In 2014 I was fostering in a different part of my house Charlotte and several kittens. I at that point became a foster failure and ended up adopting Charlotte and Wilbur.  Charlotte is all black, and Wilbur is a tuxedo.

These black cats have brought me much joy over the years and of course, are no different than other colors of cats in the way they relate back to their owners and with each other. I have grown very fond of black cats having had them around for so long. They have indeed been very good luck for me! I am sure that these young, friendly, and playful cats and kittens that we currently have at the shelter will also find loving homes and their humans will become proud parents of black cats.
