June 2023 Adoptions

Moose and Eve
Imagine driving along a major highway in the dark and noticing a tiny kitten in the median by the side of the road. In October of 2022, that’s what happened to our veteran trapper and foster, Nancy Pellegrino. She picked the little tabby up, who was near a Moose Crossing sign, and brought him home to tend.
Then at the end of December, we got a call about a tiny kitten found in a culvert in a nearby town. No other kittens were around, and no mother. Nancy came to the rescue again…and took Eve in. Moose took Eve under his “wing” and helped her adjust to her new surroundings.
Eve is a funny little girl…a bit standoffish…but when Nancy sits on the couch, Eve is right there, purring, belly up, wanting pets.
Moose has become the ambassador of the house. He is the one who welcomes any new arrivals, makes them feel at home, even when other cats in Nancy’s home are not so sure.
Moose and Eve have become very bonded.
Nancy writes:
January 7: I am so proud of my boy Moose. He is so gentle and good with Eve. He was a wild man with Newt (my house guest, twice) they raced around chasing each other and rough housing. But with Eve he just sits there and let’s her paw his face and play with his tail. She is a lot smaller than him and he does not growl, hiss or try to attack her.
Jan. 15: This is Eve. She still hides but I can just pick her up and hold her and she starts purring. Loves to play with the toys in their room upstairs and Moose plays with her.
In June of 2023, Nancy made Eve and Moose permanent members of her feline family.
Lucky, lucky kitties.

Roman & Fiona
In February a sleek black mama cat called Addie gave birth to 8 kittens and raised the lot with the help of her sister Becky until the babies were ready for foster kindergarten.
Roman, a black and brown tiger and Fiona, a little grey girl, moved in with foster mom Tori. They turned out to be amazingly sweet kittens and were adopted on June 6th by Penelope and Wayne in St. Johnsbury.
On June 8th Penelope sent photos and wrote “They are the best thing ever💙”
Maggie
This cuddly, affectionate lap kitty was rescued from an abandoned house in a neighboring town. She was starved for attention and at the same time so easily excited and overstimulated that she nipped several volunteers hard in her first week at the Shelter.
Julie and Kevin from Washington, VT were not daunted by this behavior. She seemed the perfect fit for their clan, and they adopted her on June 16th. They did all the right things to integrate Maggie into her forever home, taking it easy on the petting in the first days, and slowly introducing her to their lovely Black Lab Millie.
On June 17th Julie wrote:
“Maggie is settling in so well! She's been eating, but not her whole meal yet and seems happy. She let us brush her and has been exploring her room. She's such a sweet girl!”
On June 19th Julie wrote:
“We're keeping her name Maggie; it seems so fitting. She's been eating well, drinking water, and using her litter box. She's exploring her room much more and does a little chortle every time we visit. We're thinking of opening her space to see Millie with a barrier at the end of this week and letting her explore our bedroom.
We're so excited, she's fitting in so well with our family!

“Maggie is doing so great. She's spending much more time just out and about in the house and while she's hesitant with Millie they've been getting along from a distance. She's very vocal and loves pets.
I've attached a few pics. She's very acrobatic and quick so it's been hard to get good shots!”
Elliott
Elliott is a fine, elegant, and very intelligent kitty, 3 years of age, who loved being a cherished part of his family and being the center of attention. When his people surrendered him, because a child became allergic to cats, his whole world fell apart and he was truly devastated.
During the first weeks at the Shelter, he seemed in shock and didn’t want anybody close to him; humans were not to be trusted! But slowly his affectionate nature broke through and soon couldn’t be denied anymore. In the following weeks he kept switching between hostility and friendly advances until he dropped his bad temper altogether. One day he jumped on a volunteer’s lap and shoulder, purring up a storm and being very lovey.
It had taken Elliott 6 weeks to get over his trauma and we anticipated that in the unknown environment of a new home his terrifying experience of being abandoned might catch up again. But thanks to the patience and kindness of his adopters, his adjustment only took 6 days…

When Tracey and Eddie came on June 26th to adopt Elliott, we prepared them to expect a rocky start.
It was heartwarming to see Elliott’s immediate affection for Tracey, whom he had never met before. It was love at first sight for him. He walked into his spacious cat carrier without hesitation and went home with his new mom and dad to Boscawen, NH.

Thank you so much for spending time with me yesterday and explaining what we should expect from Elliott as he adjusts to another new place.
Elliott did VERY well riding home, and we are doing everything you suggested. We are absolutely giving him space and not petting him unless he acts like he wants to be.
Last night he checked out his new home, enjoyed sitting in the window listening to the birds, played with his new toys, laid on his back near us on the living room floor and seemed so content, and hung out with us until bedtime. He was all lovey but then later, as I was heading to bed, I had to walk by him, and as I did, he hissed and batted at me and bit me, but I was very grateful that you told me he may do that.
He slept under our bed last night, and he's kinda hiding out under there this morning for the most part. We brought his food to him and he's eating it now.
We are definitely giving him space today and will be sure to continue to do so until he seems comfortable. Thank you for letting us know that's what we need to do. I will keep you updated!

We are doing everything we can to make him happy and calm and comfortable. He is still hissing, batting at us and biting here and there, even when he initiates walking in and out of our legs. Other times he's perfectly fine and plays with us. He doesn’t want to be petted, picked up or sit on our lap. Very skittish in such a calm home.
He is eating very well.
We are giving him lots of space, yet also talking to him nicely and calmly, and most often he looks very content--rolls on his back, happy. But if we walk past him, yikes. We are concerned he won't come around, but we know he needs time, so we are being very patient for sure and happy to be. He's such a cute lil guy.

Itty Bitty
This precious little boy was adopted on June 24th by Caleb and Nicole in St.Johnsbury. His many disabilities, including a spinal deformity and a cleft palate, didn’t hold Itty Bitty back to enjoy life to the fullest. You can read his wonderful story here: Itty Bitty at Home

Tippie Toes
April 22nd, an urgent call from emergency care in Littleton: a tiny black kitten, 6-weeks-old, with some serious health issues with her digestive tract. Her owners had brought her in, but then could not afford to pay for the surgery she needed. We agreed to take the little one. Dr. Sally went right to work to assess. The best would be for the little girl to be fostered by someone with veterinary experience. Our new Shelter friend, Dr. Diana Roberts, stepped forward and took her home. Because she was polydactyl on both front and hind paws, Dr. Diana named her Tippie Toes.
Over time, her digestive issues resolved, with some skillful problem solving on Dr. Diana’s and Dr. Sally’s part…and the kitten was off and running.
Dr. Diana took her for day-care to Kingdom Animal Hospital, where she was a traveling veterinarian from March to June. There, Tippie was able to play with another 6-week-old kitten who had a broken leg. Despite that, they enjoyed kitten “play dates” with vigor and joy.
Dr. Diana took Tippie with her almost everywhere she went…restaurants, visits to friends and family. Tippie became quite the traveler.
Soon, it was time for Dr. Diana to return to her home in Honduras. Diana had fallen in love with Tippie and it was going to be very hard for her to leave her, not knowing what would become of her when a new home was found. But the stars aligned…and on June 14th, Diana’s brother, Dave, and sister-in-law, Cathy, who had recently adopted three one year old cats from Kingdom Animal Shelter, decided to adopt Tippie as well. Diana was overjoyed, because now she would be able to see Tippie whenever she visited, and she knew that Tippie was in the best of hands.
Tippie has now made close friends with Roscoe (formerly Washington). They romp and play and cuddle. Queenie and Ali (formerly Alaska) are still a little wary but are warming up.
On July 3rd Dave and Cathy wrote:
“Tippie has integrated well and the girls have stopped hiding from her and are slowly starting to accept her. Tippie and Roscoe are two peas in a pod, they run around and play plenty.
Tippie is very hard to capture! I hope you enjoy what we could get of our new favorite imp! No need to worry, Diana. Tippie is part of the family now!!!”
