Carl
Carl was found as a single stray kitten. Being quite a cuddle baby, he felt awfully lonely at the Shelter without having constant companionship. But soon he found a home with Allison and Colin in Bradford, VT, who invited him to be part of their cat family.

"Things are going really well! So far, we haven't done any major introductions between the kitties, but Carl (or Pippin, as we are calling him) is all settled in his room and has gotten a lot more comfortable. He was a little uncertain at first but within a day or two he was feeling pretty okay with us and getting comfy in his new space. He especially loves his tunnel!
The cats have all caught glimpses of each other from a distance but haven't had any close encounters yet. I think we're going to try to do some introductions this weekend. Pippin is getting bored and wanting to explore the rest of the house and meet his new buddies. Ziggy is feeling a little bit intimidated - he is a big fraidy cat. But we're making sure to give the adult cats attention as well and trying not to disrupt their routines too much.
Colin slept in the guest room with Pippin the first couple of nights but he's doing well on his own now. And I don't think it'll be much more than another week or so before he can be totally free range! He's just a real sweetheart and we love him!"

Dewey, Luna, and Quimby
Jessica, Joel, their animal-loving kids and gentle dog are the happy adopters of three precious kittens: Dewey, Luna and Quimby.
The littles made themselves quickly at home after spending their initial time in a safe-space to get used to their new place without becoming overwhelmed. They soon ventured out into the house and met their new canine friend. They love to cuddle with the entire family. Even grey-and-white Luna, who used to be stand-offish in her foster home, became a lap cat in the arms of Jessica.

Hershey & Gus Gus
Hershey and Gus Gus were rescued as babies at the same age from different feral moms. They were raised by Julie Hall, one of our amazing foster volunteers.
Raising foster kittens is a work of love. Seeing them adopted to a good place is always rewarding and at the same time it takes a big stretch to the heartstrings. It never gets easy to give those babies away.
These two littles were especially lucky. Julie's family had recently moved to a bigger house. They decided to adopt and keep the kittens right where they belonged, with their human mom Julie and the rest of their clan.
They became what we jokingly call "foster failures" which are no failures at all!
A big thank you to Julie and the many good foster parents who provide the precious, nourishing environment for abandoned kitties to thrive, so that they can have a good life as wonderful, trusting companion cats.

Jasmine
Jasmine, a beautiful feisty 9-year-old kitty, came from a large busy household where her special senior needs couldn't be met. Skillfully she got her family to surrender her to the Shelter by peeing in the bathtub and being a bit of a pain, so that she could pursue her goal to adopt her very own person.
It didn't take her long to pick out her man.
Jasmine is now living the high life with Maurice in St. Johnsbury. They have bonded strongly and are very good for each other, like two peas in a pod. Jasmine has her own bedroom with lots of toys and things to play with and a window to look outside. She has the run of the place and likes to sit with Maurice and watch TV together. Life is sweet!

Kisses
Kisses is one of three lucky siblings who were rescued from a neglected barn cat situation. Sadly, many of the kittens born in such a place die in agony of infectious illnesses or are taken by predators.
Please take advantage of local rescue organizations who will spay, neuter and vaccinate your resident feral cats for free! Please contact us at [email protected] for information.
Kisses and her two brothers spent a happy childhood in safety with good food and medical care in our Shelter kindergarten before they graduated to their foster home.
Teresa from Wheelock, VT, was the happy adopter of this precious being. She hoped that her kitten would become a companion for her older cat Bella who recently lost her cat brother and playmate to cancer. Kisses is now named Lucy Lou.
This is Teresa's kitten diary:
10-31-21 "Things seems to be going very well. The little one seems to have adjusted nicely. I have to say she is probably the most loving kitten I have ever been around. This morning we put Bella in another room and let Kisses roam around the house on her own. She was quite intrigued and curious and then just found a little spot to lay down and was very comfortable. She and Bella have smelled each other through the bottom of the door. They made a couple of little noises at each other. I am following the guidelines from the Shelter article (How to introduce a new pet to your household), so we will just take it a day at a time."
11-2-21 "Oh my, she is the sweetest little girl. She has been zooming around the house like she has always lived here. I put a baby gate at the door to the study so Bella and Lucy Lou (Kisses) met each other through that. There was a little tail puffing and hissing at first. Then on 11-1-21, there was nose touching through the gate with no hissing. Later, the girls were introduced to one another, each being held by one parent. They touched noses and smelled each other. That has happened a couple of times".
11-8-21 "The cats are doing very well. They are playing together more every day and have both been sleeping with us at night. We feel that Bella has become more interested in playing with her toys and keeps tabs on Lucy Lou. She is definitely a lap cat and a little cuddler. "
11-13-21 from Nancy, her adoption counselor: "I spoke with Teresa this evening.
Lucy Lou was sitting in Teresa's lap as we spoke. Lucy is doing very well and she acts like she has lived at their home forever. She runs everywhere and is active and playful. Bella and Lucy are becoming good friends. They have adjusted to each other over the past weeks and things have been great. They play and enjoy chasing toy mice and laser points together. The girls touch noses and if Lucy is not in sight, Bella will look for her. On occasion, Lucy will still go into her safe room (which is separated by a baby gate) and hang out or go into her tower, but Lucy is out and about most times. Lucy sleeps with Bella and her family at night and follows Teresa around everywhere.

Quincy & Sylvester
When young parents Erica and Cris visited the Shelter with their baby girl and their excited toddler Athena, the feline community was a little wary at first. Young kids don't always recommend themselves to sensitive cat ears, and curious little hands can seem like a menace.
But one bold black kitty stepped forward to find out what all the noise was about. Young Quincy decided that this family was great fun. He hung out with them, played and made new friends. And on their second visit he convinced his best buddy Sylvester to join the fray.
The two boys soon went home with their lovely new family, just in time for the onset of the cold season, when one wants a couple of purring cats on the lap and snoozing dogs at one's feet.

Rascal
Sweet lap cat Rascal was found in a barn, his silky longish fur all matted and dirty. In his cozy room at the Shelter, he was over-the-moon excited to be with people again.
Earlier this year Rascal had strayed from home into the spring sunshine and couldn't find his way back. He hunkered down in a nice barn and was fed by locals. As it got colder, he was picked up by concerned cat lovers and his address was discovered through his microchip. But his family wasn't able to take him back at that point.
Instead, he found a new home with Wanda and her husband in Danville.
Rascal, who is one of the softest and cuddliest cats, likes to snuggle in Wanda's lap which is exactly what she was looking for. She had had cats all her life and said that none had ever been snugglers before. He is a great gift to his new folks and they are very happy to have him in their lives.

Sabrina
It is always heartbreaking when a senior cat loses a life-long human companion.
12-year-old Sabrina was devastated when her person passed away. Being very shy and gentle, it was clear that finding a new home for this doll-faced sweetheart would be a challenge.
Foster mom Christine, who was friends with Sabrina's person, tried her very best to make it happen: She worked patiently with Sabrina so that she would come out of her shell and start enjoying life again. Christine nursed Sabrina when she got sick and introduced her to new experiences so that she would become more courageous in going to a new place.
But such great care comes with a price. The two of them grew very close and Sabrina became a
new member of Christine's and her husband's treasured pet family.

Smokey
Smokey, a lively Siamese kitten was bouncing off the walls at his previous home. Being the only kitten and having nothing else to do, he was determined to take down the house. He was simply too much to handle for his human, who gladly surrendered him to KAS.
Nikki in Littleton NH fostered the little monkey and soon completely fell in love. She decided to adopt him. Her older kitty needed some convincing but she now tolerates him well enough, if he doesn't try to catch her tail.
Smokey, now called Sully is super playful, loves to play with Nikki's hair and to snuggle with her at night. He is growing into a large, beautiful, energetic house panther.

Timmy & Dudley
The two black kitty brothers Dudley and Little Timmy found a purrfect home with Michael in Plainfield, VT.
Michael wrote:
"The boys adjusted well to their new surroundings although sudden sounds in the house (like a phone ring) and my entry in and out still puts them under the couch for a few minutes, and then they emerge again.
Right now Timmy is sleeping by my side (see photo) and Dudley… who is braver and more affectionate… has already been back & forth across my lap, purring loudly, and is now sleeping elsewhere.
They are eating voraciously, drinking and began using the cat box almost immediately. They seem to trust me. The living room is big enough and diverse enough that they are still exploring. Cat-proofing took a good half-day. It’s safe for them, has window sills looking out in 3 directions, and is already their “home base.”
Starting tonight or tomorrow I will let my older cat Adele approach the gate from her side. She knows they’re here as I bring objects to her home base (my second floor bedroom) that have their scent on them. All is well."

Walker
Walker's noble qualities were shining through from day one when he arrived at the Shelter, despite his somewhat shabby, neglected exterior. His calm, gentle and polite manner quickly won the hearts of the volunteers.
Patches of fur were missing on his raggedy back, due to a skin allergy, but after weeks of good food and excellent care his luxurious tuxedo coat started to grow back, shiny and soft.
Walker, who is about 6-years-old, was diagnosed with a heart murmur and needed to be on a daily medicine for a long and healthy life.
Dianne and Dennis from Walden were up to the challenge. They quickly learned how to pill a cat, took him home and he is doing fantastic.
Dianne and Dennis soon reported that it took Walker about five minutes to warm up to them. "It seems as though Walker has never lived anywhere else in his life." They have never seen a cat adjust so quickly to a new home. He sleeps with them every night since his first night home. He is next to Dianne and Dennis night and day and he is helping them get through the loss of their beloved previous cat.
Dianne says that he eats like a champ and takes his meds great. He has the total run of the house and has explored every bit of it, windows, closets and all. Walker is quite confident and not afraid of anything. He has a big personality and is quite hilarious, adorable and so funny!

Dianne and Dennis said "We are in love", "What a character", "He is a delight", "An excellent, excellent boy" and "We would not part with him for anything!"
