Anise and Licorice
Anise and Licorice were part of a very large young family of sleek black cats. They were the off-spring of petite, tail-less Katarina who gave birth to several litters within two years. The overwhelmed owner finally decided to surrender most of her cats to the Shelter and KAS supported her to get her remaining kitties spayed and neutered.
All of these beautiful cats had the same friendly, gregarious and life-loving spirit.
Anise and Licorice showed a strong bond shortly after their arrival at the Shelter in March. When Anise came back from the neuter-clinic, he was very scared, trembling and crying in his recovery cage, but he was quickly comforted by his sister, who groomed him lovingly and cheered him up.
During their 6-month-stay at the Shelter they grew into confident and warm companion cats who lit up the space with their presence and became a favorite of the volunteers. They enjoyed roaming the Shelter and occasionally did some mischief like unrolling entire paper towel rolls, to keep everybody on their toes and in laughter.
In October Lisa and Randy from Corinth, VT were inquiring about a bonded pair of kitties who might be friendly with a dog. They had recently lost their beloved 15-year-old cat and felt very lonely without a feline in the house. Their sweet black Lab mix Rebel kept looking and pining for his cat friend.
Lisa came to the Shelter with her 11-year-old cat-loving granddaughter to meet Anise and Licorice. When Lisa and the girl picked up the two cats, they were both surprisingly mellow in their arms. The family decided to give these two kitties their forever home in their beautiful log house, with lots of space to run around, an open stair case with a loft to climb up to and watch from above, lots of cuddles and love to give.

They also became a great help in Lisa's home office.

They are spoiled and settled in. My granddaughter decided that she wanted to rename Anise to Jasper. Jasper likes to cuddle more than Licorice. Rebel and the cats are doing great together.
I have highly recommended Kingdom Animal Shelter to friends for adopting kitties!"
Carter
Sweet 8-year-old Carter was surrendered with great sadness by his person who had to move into senior housing and couldn't find a place that would accept a cat. Both of them were heartbroken about the separation.
Being a very sensitive, affectionate and loyal cat, Carter became quite depressed. He was hiding and wouldn't eat during his first weeks at the Shelter. He was housed in a comfortable room on his own where his caretakers could shower him with love and attention. He also received medication to lift his mood and appetite.
Over the weeks Carter's spirits improved little by little, but it was clear that the only medicine that would make him well again would be a proper home with his own human to bond with.
During Saturday visitor hours at the Shelter, a family from Peacham discovered Carter in his quiet back-room. Laura, Stan and their young adult son Sunny were moved by Carter's calm and angelic demeanor. They had a history of taking in cats who were troubled or had special needs.
Soon afterwards, Carter moved to Peacham and started his residence in Sunny's bedroom.

Carter was thrilled to have his new family doting on him. But he took his time to make sure everything was safe in his unknown environment, switching between cuddle sessions on the bed and hiding underneath. He steadily gained confidence in venturing out though...

"Carter is definitely making progress toward being more comfortable here!
He still hides a lot during the daytime, but he is coming out more and more often. At night, he explores the house quite freely, plays with toys, uses the box, and eats heartily. We feel that, given time, he will move about freely in the daytime as well. In fact, Carter just now came out from under the bed and walked past me to go get something to eat. He seemed calm and relaxed.
Sometimes in the evenings, we bring him downstairs to the living room to hang out with us while we watch TV. He has definitely bonded with Sunny and spends part of every night sleeping with him. He will purr up a storm for him.
Attached are pictures Sunny took of Carter enjoying petting time.
We think that Carter just needs a little more time to fully settle in, but he'll get there. We feel lucky to have him!"

Nyx
In early summer a very pretty young calico cat was discovered in a garage of an elderly person. Nobody seemed to miss her and she soon found a foster home with Michelle in Cabot, who named her Nyx.
Nyx was such a sweet-natured and lovable kitty. She pulled on Michelle's heart strings right from the start. Shy little Nyx did want to make friends with Michelle's two- and four-legged family. She was welcomed by the giant dogs and humans of the household but not so much by the resident cats who had the last say.
Therefore, Nyx had to stay in Michelle's basement for the summer where she made herself quite comfortable. A couch was moved there so that Michelle could spend quality time with her foster kitty.
Usually, summer is a season when adoption rates are low. Few people want to invite a new furry family member to their home while being out and about or traveling.
As time went by Michelle became secretly worried that Nyx might actually find a new place other than hers. Early in October a potential adopter showed up, but decided on a different cat.
Afterwards Michelle wrote: "I was really sad when I thought Nyx might be adopted out. She really is a great cat and she is well on her way to winning everyone over here. She is patient and persistent all at once.
Michelle moved quickly then to make Nyx her own and made another attempt to integrate her fully into the household. Fortunately, by this time the senior cats had calmed down about the gentle intruder and everybody welcomed Nyx into the home to stay forever.
On October 17th Michelle wrote:
"Nyx has already won all cats and dogs over- she is just a real calm and patient girl.
I guess I am not great at fostering...."
Way to go, Michelle!
We love our "foster failures" 😻

Moana
Moana is a friendly, fluffy and sensitive black kitty with a precious fur collar of grey tufts around her neck.
Three years ago, when she was a kitten, she was adopted from KAS after being rescued from a barn. But Moana had become very nervous in her first home. She was frightened by lots of noises and guests in her very active family, and then there was a new puppy to get away from. She was finally surrendered back to the Shelter so that she could find a quieter home where she would feel safe and happy.
Mitch, a retired gentleman from St. Johnsbury had recently lost his beloved cat of 15 years and was looking for another feline housemate to keep him company. He had a lot to offer to a cat: her own house, round-a-clock service and warm friendship.
Mitch and Moana hit it off at their first meeting at the Shelter and Moana moved in with him on October 29th.
Next day, Mitch's adoption counselor Nancy wrote:
"Moana (now Molly) went home yesterday with Mitch from St. Johnsbury. I called Mitch just to check in and see how the first day is going. Mitch sounded so happy, I could hear the smile in his voice.
Molly hid under the couch for the first hour or so, then began to explore a bit.
He reported that Molly is a "keeper", she is wonderful, she is purring and kneading, she has sat next to him on the couch, she has eaten (a lot) and used the litter box. Mitch is amazed by her and thinks she is just wonderful. Molly has discovered the bay window and Mitch thinks that this window will be a favorite spot for Molly. So very sweet!"
Wade
Good old Wade was one of our shortest-term residents at the Shelter this year. At first glance that might seem surprising: He was a senior cat, 12 years of age, he had several geriatric health issues, and he needed dental surgery. And yet, he was adopted in the blink of an eye - by his personal vet tech; a match made in heaven!
Was it his extra lucky toes? His great gentleman charms? The big heart of his adopter? Or was it the choice of her cat Chase? Probably all of these and more.
Wade's previous owner was facing health issues and had to give up her cats. She was very concerned that Wade would not find a new home. But Wade didn't seem worried.
Once he was surrendered to the Shelter, he resided in his quarantine cage like a king in a castle, nonchalantly, kindly and curious what novelties life would bring. He greeted his caretakers like old friends.
Wade's dental health was alarming and needed tending as soon as possible. A week after his arrival he was handed over to the Mitzvah Fund in Montpelier who had provided veterinary surgery for KAS kitties in the past. Complications during the dental procedure made it necessary for Wade to stay under observation for a couple of weeks. Therefore, Deb Glottmann, the president of the Mitzvah Fund, took him to her house.

From day one Deb sent updates of Wade making himself home, being best buddies with her cat Chase and becoming a central part of the family. He was good with the dogs, he was patient with Chase's habit of stepping over everybody's boundaries, he was a great help in the office, and he determinedly made Deb his own person. He even looked like a beloved cat that Deb had lost years ago. She didn't really have a choice.
On October 24th Deb sent pictures of her feline buddies with the words: "Just send the adoption papers for God's Sake!"
We are so grateful that Wade has found his forever home and is in the best of hands. Thank you, Deb, and the Mitzvah Fund!

Simon and Rocky
Simon and Rocky had a rough start in life. They were born in a barn in a neighboring town and were rescued at four-weeks-old. They had the typical kitten diseases and parasites that are passed around in neglected barn cat colonies and it wasn't clear for a while if these babies would make it.
But their foster mom Pat Coe was determined to save their lives. One of the kittens was especially sick and weak. Pat named him Rocky, because he needed to be a fighter. During their play sessions she would hum the title theme of "Rocky Balboa" to make him strong -- and it worked! It was amazing to see the little guy tapping his paw at a toy in the rhythm of the song!
The tiny brothers became big healthy boys. They were adopted on October 28th by Susanne in Danville, whose life and home are dedicated to her beloved cat family.

"The boys are doing well. Sweet Simon slept on my lap on the floor in their initial safe-room for a little while this afternoon while Hunter "Rocky” was sleeping in the cat tree.
They both have the loudest purrs, though I’d have to say Simon’s purrs are more frequent and louder! The boys seem to love to chase each other around the cat tree and the scratching post in addition to wrestling. Hunter is quite the athlete climbing the posts in a flash. Simon is more cautious and waits to see how his brother manages before he gives it a shot.

They are generally not very vocal so when I heard one of them crying, I immediately went to check on them. To my relief, I found Hunter at the gate with a fuzzy ball in his mouth. Sooo Cute!!! When I threw it, he chased it down and brought it halfway back to me. He’s done it twice now and even brought it closer the second time! He really is a great hunter!! Simon watches and does his share of picking up toy prey and playing with it. Simon hasn’t tried the pitiful cry at the gate with it in his mouth, yet.
All the kitties are still getting to know each other through the gate right now. For the time being, the three of us (Simon, Hunter and I) are still enjoying our time together alone though all the cats are showing more interest in each other. The boys will be introduced to more of the house and the other kitties soon though.
The boys are a wonderful addition to our feline family! I love them!!
These little guys wouldn’t be who they are today without the wonderful care they got from KAS, especially from their foster mom Pat!"
