Soul Cats

I love and cherish every cat I have ever had. I can think back to when I was five and remember every one through the years. And I believe I have given them the best of care, with a joyful and full heart. Every one of them makes me smile, and remember cuteness, and miss some sweet thing about them.
But… every now and then, there is a very special cat, a cat I call a Soul Cat. Maybe some of you have had a Soul Cat.
Soul Cats are the ones that, when you think back over the cats you have known and loved, you say “he was the best cat I ever had! There was just something very special about him.” They are those special cats that are so deeply embedded in your mind and heart, that they stay curled up there, in your heart, long after they are gone. And when they are gone, it is like a part of you is missing. Soul Cats might have been the ones who knew how to help you through hard times, by lying right by your side, by coming to sit on your lap and staying. They might be the ones that when you look at each other, your eyes hold, you feel this humming thread between you. They may be the ones that had special needs that you spent a long time helping become more comfortable, finding between you a special closeness routine that makes absolute trust. They are the ones there is a special kind of communication with, that is just somehow different from all the other cats you have loved and cared for.

Obi Wan Kenobi is my Soul Cat.
He is my Soul Cat partly because we have been through so much together. He was born without a working colon. He had to have some pretty serious surgery to remove his colon and reattach his small intestine to the outside world. It was rough on us…rough on him.
He is my Soul Cat partly for all the care and worry and love that was poured into him.

But it is more than that. My heart just hums when we are looking at each other…very intently…or talking to each other…or when I watch him play and he makes me laugh, even now at 7 years old. How long will he be with me? Physically, I don’t know. I hope for quite a while longer. But even after that…he will be around, he will be curled up in my heart, he will make me smile, even laugh. And I will count it an honor and a gift that he came into my life…that we shared a special love and a lot of laughter. You may have a special Soul Cat. A true gift….that can make us better human beings, to each other, and to those non-human beings we share this planet with.
