Sweet Presents in a Garden
-Helen Morrison, Board President
There is something about spending a quiet moment in a garden, just sitting on a bench, listening to the sounds of bees exploring blossoms, or the sound of birds conversing in surrounding trees. Perhaps the sound of children playing or of traffic can be heard, but far off….not near enough to distract from the peace of being still and surrounded by delicate scents and sights. How did Nature ever come up with such stunning ways to impress!!
And if one is very very lucky, as one is sitting in a garden, maybe in Rod Lauman’s rose garden in St. Johnsbury, one might have the inquisitive and trusting presence of a feline…exploring, wanting your company, curious about a flower or an insect, maybe even flirting with you a bit.

Many of you know of our wonderful, annual event…Cats and Roses. It usually happens in June, when the roses are in full bloom. It is a time to check out some offerings in our yard sale. But it is also a special time to explore the garden, perhaps have a tour of the roses with Rod…and to see posters of all the cats, nestled in among the roses, all the cats that are looking for a new home while being cared for lovingly at the Shelter.
Here is a little slide show tour of some of the roses and of the kitties. Enjoy. And remember that Rod’s garden is open to visitors all summer…so come and walk and sit and perhaps even meet a temporary feline neighbor friend.
