Valentine Buddies
-Helen Morrison, Board President

Call me sentimental…..but February makes me think of brilliant red hearts, cards, chocolates, flowers, and maybe a bit of champagne.  And of course, it makes me think of Love, in all its glorious forms…romantic, family, for the Earth, and among friends.  And when I think of friends, I think not only of human friends, but our non-human pet friends, who grace our lives and fill our homes and hearts with love.  And I think of our pets and their love for each other.  Do they actually “love” each other?  I think so.  And I believe they need one another, that their lives are more complete, if they have not only their human friends but also other animals to be with and relate to.

When someone surrenders two kitties and tells us they are bonded, we adopt them out together.  We don’t split them up to make adoption easier.  That bond is precious.  Sometimes when cats come to the Shelter alone, while they are there, they make close friends with another cat.  Several years ago we had a cat, Mylie, and a kitten, Nessie, and they became the best of friends.  People pleaded with us to adopt one or the other.  But we held fast…and Mylie and Nessie went home together.    And we try very hard to adopt out kittens in pairs….because that is how they do best, behaviorally and emotionally.  They love their humans….but they love their feline buddies, as well.  They speak the same language, both in body and in sound.  And they learn how to behave as proper kitties from other felines.
And so for the month of February we are celebrating our 14 bonded pairs of kittens and cats that were adopted in 2022.  Fourteen, in honor of February 14th….how sweet is that!!
We hope you enjoy our slide show of these sweet Valentine Buddies.
