Volunteer Spotlight
Jill is an “old timer” with Kingdom Animal Shelter. She and her wife, Rita, adopted Callie and Fanny in 2010, when we were just new to the shelter in St. Johnsbury Center. Callie and Fanny were kittens at the time. They are now 9 years old (“hard to believe”) and totally well tended to. Callie and Fanny “are the best cats ever”. They are active and playful and the best of friends Well, the best of friends except when Callie (all black) is warm and cozy in her bed by the fire. Fanny (black and white) waits for Callie to get the bed just the right temperature..and then boots Callie out of the nice warm bed. Hmmmmm…..sisterly love?
Jill grew up in Southern California and was an English major in college. In 1980, she moved to Burlington, Vermont, to go to graduate school. But we all know how plans change. Jill became a licensed plumber and continued that work for 20 years. She then began work as a gardener, specializing in perennial gardens, for 10 years. She and Rita were very involved in the West Danville Community Club which manages the Joe’s Pond Beach.
Jill and Rita love to bike ride, hike, all those outdoor physical things. They also spent a number of years traveling in Europe, staying in one city and exploring its environs, its art, its culture.
Jill began volunteering for KAS in January, 2018. She had moved to St. Johnsbury from West Danville. Because she loved cats, it was now more feasible to spend time helping at the Shelter. She is one of our stalwert Monday morning duty crew. She finds the Shelter “beautiful”, the other volunteers “a pleasure to work with”. And we all know that is true. There are no better, more dedicated, more caring volunteers anywhere on this earth!
We are all glad when our cats and kittens find wonderful, loving homes. It is especially gratifying to find just the right home for the cats who have been with us a long time. When asked if there are any cats that stand out for her, Jill said that she really is just so happy when they find their forever homes. But she did say she misses Shadow just a bit. That is totally understandable. I think we all miss Shadow just a little bit...even though we hear she is one happy cat with her new loving family.
We are so thrilled to have Jill’s presence in the shelter, her love and care for the kitties, her skill in tending. Thank you, Jill!!!
